The genes you don't get from your parents (but can't live without) - Devin Shuman
Dig into the essential role that mitochondrial DNA played in the evolution of living things on Earth, and find out why it’s still evolving.
--
Inside our cells, each of us has a second set of genes completely separate from our 23 pairs of chromosomes. And this isn’t just true for humans— it’s true of every animal, plant, and fungus on Earth. This second genome belongs to our mitochondria, an organelle inside our cells. So why are they so different from anything else in our bodies? Devin Shuman explores the purpose of mitochondrial DNA.

Can we cure genetic diseases by rewriting DNA? | David R. Liu
In a story of scientific discovery, chemical biologist David R. Liu shares a breakthrough: his lab's development of base editors that can rewrite DNA. This crucial step in genome editing takes the promise of CRISPR to the next level: if CRISPR proteins are molecular scissors, programmed to cut specific DNA sequences, then base editors are pencils, capable of directly rewriting one DNA letter into another. Learn more about how these molecular machines work -- and their potential to treat or even cure genetic diseases.

How mutations, or variations, can lead to genetic conditions
There are approximately 20,000 genes in the human genome. A mutation, or permanent variation, in just one gene can lead to a genetic condition. Knowing what causes a genetic condition is the first step in understanding how, potentially through ongoing research in gene therapy, healthcare providers might be able to treat these conditions differently.

Does Natural Selection Drive the Origin of Species?
Phil Gaskill in this 2016 talk traces the history of the concept of natural selection and its adoption by both creationists and evolutionist. He explains why recent (ao 2016) evidence presents serious challenges not only to current creation and evolution models of adaptation but to the concept of natural selection itself. He presents a new model of adaptation which appears to better fit the evidence, which provides new insights into the incredible complexity with which living creatures were designed in order to overcome environmental challenges, and which serves as a sobering reminder of the destructive consequences of sin for all life.

Mendelian Genetics and Punnett Squares
For all of human history, we've been aware of heredity. Children look like their parents. But why? When Gregor Mendel pioneered the field of genetics, he began to try to answer that question, and now that we know about chromosomes, all of his work will make a lot of sense. Let's take a look at Mendel's work, his laws of segregation and independent assortment, and try to understand what these mean for genetics and inheritance.

Learn more about how these molecular machines work -- and their potential to treat or even cure genetic diseases.

https://wn.com/Can_We_Cure_Genetic_Diseases_By_Rewriting_Dna_|_David_R._Liu
In a story of scientific discovery, chemical biologist David R. Liu shares a breakthrough: his lab's development of base editors that can rewrite DNA. This crucial step in genome editing takes the promise of CRISPR to the next level: if CRISPR proteins are molecular scissors, programmed to cut specific DNA sequences, then base editors are pencils, capable of directly rewriting one DNA letter into another. Learn more about how these molecular machines work -- and their potential to treat or even cure genetic diseases.
